Bougainvillea looper (Disclisioprocta stellata)

The bougainvillea looper is a caterpillar that is typically up to an inch long with smooth skin and is yellow or green-brown in color. The young loopers, including newly hatched larvae, typically feed on tender shoots and along the edge of leaves. This pest’s damage results in a characteristic scalloped appearance on your bougainvillea plants.

Signs of Infestation

Signs of infestation include visible droppings and noticeable damage to foliage caused by chewing. The adult loopers do not feed on foliage. Infestations may lead to severe defoliation as shown in the far left image.

Treatment & Management

To effectively manage the infestation, foliar treatments should be applied at the first signs of pests. These treatments help control and reduce the population of active loopers. Regularly monitor your plants for any signs of new infestations to ensure continued protection.
